Modallion - Across The Line - IDS:2012

Robyn Waffle was inspired to create modern versions of the traditional panel, prayer & tribal rugs because she is passionate about paying tribute to the past while inspiring the now and the future.

Working as a fine artist for many years, Robyn had not yet recognized the history and story-telling abilities found in the rug world. Once introduced to it, she became truly inspired by the similarities rugs and fine art share. This is Robyn’s first rug collection; however her fifth series of artwork.

Artist Statement : Across The Line Collection : 2012

“Hand woven rugs are so rich with history, stories and beautiful intricate patterning. The art of applying wool and silk, varying pile-heights, looping yarns and blending colours echo the rituals in applying paint to canvas. The romance of creating with these two mediums is similar, however, rug design is challenging on another level due to the fact that you do not have full control over the final product.

To let go and allow the design to be translated uniquely by the hands of those who weave it is what makes these pieces truly one-of-a-kind. The process becomes a conversation between two very different worlds, as well as an experimental fusion between modern design technologies and ancient handmade appliqués.
My first rug collection, Across The Line, is a statement about the ‘spirit of our time’. The truth that we need to produce quality, long-lasting products; care for our earth; and break down the barriers which segregate our masses.

I see rugs as intricate platforms for artistic expression. Due to their estimated lifespan of two hundred years, I believe we should respect rugs as stamps in time, allowing them to illustrate ‘the spirit of our time’. These panel, prayer & tribal rugs sing about the mystery behind our existence; the rich history in every tradition; and the electric energies that bind it all together.”
